Caterpillars like tent caterpillars, bagworms, and webworms can attack trees anytime during the year. The most substantial threat they produce is defoliation as they consume tree leaves. Even though plenty of insecticides can take care of the infestation, tree caterpillars, like the oak tree caterpillar, are usually effectively and swiftly disposed of naturally.
Eliminated by Hand
If small trees contain not that many caterpillars, the easiest method of doing away with oak tree caterpillars is to pick them off by hand. Wearing gloves, you can squash them between your fingers or step on them to kill them. As you can tell, this isn’t a job for the weak at heart. A much cleaner solution is to put the caterpillars in a bucket of soapy water. The pests will die instantly in the water solvent. If just the thought of touching a caterpillar gives you the heebie-jeebies, contact a Buffalo tree contractor for help.
Caterpillar nests appear like silken bags dangling in limbs. You can eliminate every nest by clipping the top string and then putting the whole nest in soapy water. Another option is to rip the nest open with a stick and let birds kill the caterpillars. Remove the nests at dawn, at dusk, or on cloudy days.
Draping a barrier around every tree's trunk and covering the barrier stops caterpillars from infecting the trees. The barrier can be duct tape, tar paper, or tin foil coated with petroleum jelly. Caterpillars can’t crawl across the covered surface. Reapply petroleum jelly as necessary and avoid getting it on the trees since it can harm the bark.
